Kinesio Taping
WHAT IS KINESIO TAPING?
Originally developed in Japan to give assistance to weak muscles, Kinesio Taping is a taping technique that enables therapists to support and stabilise joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. This is what is so different to other taping methods. It is effective for treating a wide range of medical problems which includes sports injuries, oedema, scars and pain management.
Many famous sports professionals use Kinesio tape toreduce swelling and improve range of motion. It is was also used at the 2004 Olympic Games.
How does Kinesio Taping Work?
Kinesio Taping works with 4 main functions.
Pain - Reduces pain by taking pressure off receptors
Lymphatic - Eliminates fluid/bleeding beneath the skin
Joint - Adjusts mis-alignment to aid fascia and muscle function
Muscle - Reconditions abnormal tension and strengthens
The tape works by lifting the skin to form convolutions, increasing the space between the skin and the muscles. This promotes the flow of lymphatic fluid, thereby helping to reduce muscle fatigue, inflammation, pain, improve range of motion, correct posture, adjust joint mis-alignment and protect against futher injury.
Kinesio taping may be used during treatment if it is felt necessary to aid improvement. The tape is 100% high-grade cotton and is hypo-allergenic and allows the skin to breathe. So far, it has been found to be highly effective in improving recovery, especially in lymphoedema. It opens up lymphatic pathways moving from areas of high pressure to low pressure and towards working lymph nodes.
The patient can continue with the treatment at home.
